Researchers from the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that a robotic teacher monitoring students’ attention levels and keeping them alert could be good for classes. It could be especially useful for online instruction, where it is usually impossible to know whether students are engaged and concentrating.

Bilge Mutlu and Dan Szafir programmed a Wakamaru humanoid robot to mimic the techniques that human teachers use to make sure their students are focused and not snoozing, and it was found to boost how much they remembered from their lessons. New Scientist reports that the robot told students a story and then tested them afterwards to see what they remembered. Engagement levels were monitored using an EEG sensor and when a significant decrease in certain brain signals indicated that the student’s attention level had fallen, the system sent a signal to the robot to raise its voice or use arm gestures to regain their attention.

Students who received a cue from the robot were much better at recalling the story than those who didn’t, answering an average of 9 out of 14 questions correctly, compared to just 6.3 out of 14. The results of this study were presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Texas earlier this month.

Supersonix is an interdisciplinary exploration of sound through critical theory, experiment, and performance.

A partnership between the Exhibition Road Cultural Group and the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts Europe (SLSA EU), the three-day conference is aimed at anyone from the arts, curatorial studies, the sciences, humanities, and social sciences who is interested in an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sound and sonification. 

The conference is underpinned by a range of artists’ performances and panels on collaborations between the arts, sciences, technology, and design. With an international line-up of keynote speakers and delegates from Australia, Europe, and North America already confirmed, Supersonix is a unique opportunity to join a global sonic conversation.

Film Programme
Artist Aura Satz curates a selection of films which share an attention and sensitivity to the materiality of sound and sound-making technologies, devices, and instruments. Alongside her own films she will screen films by Manon de Boer, Jayne Parker, and Luke Fowler. Films will be shown throughout the conference at a specially created pop-up cinema at auction house Christie’s South Kensington.

Evening performances
Live sound art performances by three leading sound artists: Norway’s Jana Winderen and the UK’s Mira Calix and Kaffe Matthews, Friday 22 June, 19:30–22, First Floor Gallery space, Science Museum. This event is exclusive to Supersonix conference delegates.

Free evening lecture
The opening lecture will be held by Sha Xin Wei, Research Director of Topology media lab, Concordia University, Montreal,18:30–20, Imperial College, G16 lecture theatre. The lecture is free. All welcome!

For the first time, in more than 25 cities around the world, CreativeMornings chapters will be hosting events under one common, unified theme throughout the month of June: The Intersection of Arts + Technology, presented in partnership with Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

More than ever, design-focused organizations are disrupting industries and sparking innovation. From the thousands of projects funded through Kickstarter to Airbnb’s game-changing service to Apple’s record-breaking sales and overall bar-setting innovation, art and design represent an undeniable driver of progress. When tight budgets force arts education to be cut, we aren’t eliminating a “nice to have,” we are risking our potential to foster the next generation of creative doers and makers.

The Dutch Art Institute (DAI) connects art students to practitioners at the forefront of praxis worldwide. By initiating explorative associations DAI’s research trips aim to promote a better understanding of the (art) world in transition. From May 3 until May 16, during the Biennale and Dakar OFF events, the DAI teams up with colleagues in and around Dakar. Findings will be shared during a public “class” on May 14, organized in collaboration with Raw Material Company, center for art, knowledge, and society that works to foster appreciation and growth of African artistic and intellectual creativity.
DAI’s associate professor Grant Watson will moderate the discussion around three projects:

Negotiating Equity
…looks at ‘curation as artistic practice’ in regard to local contexts, in-situ installations, and digital technologies. This year it finds form and conclusion in the streets, landscapes, and with the people of Dakar. Participants develop projects that include tourist attractions such as the controversial Monument to African Renaissance, where the ideological ownerships of imported monuments will be questioned. Traversing two worlds, a sound composition will unite the distinct differences between Ile de Gorée, nowadays a Unesco heritage site that marks its importance as a monument for Atlantic slave trade, and the Dutch island of Goeree, which it was named after. The presidential palace is not only the seat of government in Dakar but has become the site of citizens’ self-immolation as a form of protest, which will be mapped through GPS and video interviews.

…a performance project tutored by Ian White in collaboration with Emma Hedditch and Jimmy Robert, curated by If I Can’t Dance I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution and coordinated by Tanja Baudoin. The project seeks to explore how ‘theatre’ can be understood from the position of artistic practice, to experiment with how such a set of interpretations might be of use within it. The project considers, occupies, and enacts aspects of theatre and its operations—to consider the positions from which we speak, how we act, and what, through different frames, speaking and action might be. The trip to Senegal begins with a working period at the Ecole des Sables, a dance company and school for African dance, located in the coastal village of Toubab Dialaw. Here the students will work on developing a model of ‘theatre’ as the group has come to understand it through their work together and develop a series of ‘performances’ through which this model might be demonstrated.

Re-reading Public Images
…will conduct its research in Dakar with the aim to investigate images that relate to the notion of publicness. The participants will question images that appear in the urban context and ‘re-read’ them regarding their role in public life, politics, and common identities. They will collaborate in this project with students from the Collège Universitaire d’Architecture in Dakar. To gain a deeper understanding of the city, architect Jean Charles Tall and artist Viye Diba will lead the group on city walks to read Dakar from their specific points of view. Projectleader is artist Florian Göttke.

    The international artist collective LIVING COPENHAGEN, Områdefornyelsen Skt Kjelds Kvarter and Redline (USA) invites social art practitioners and Copenhagen City colla…borators to a meet-up.

    In the triangular collaboration and confrontation between artists, city-planners and communities, are we really doing art, and are we really being social? What do we really think and do when engaging socially as artists?

    How closely can we work with city official and community, and what does the City of Copenhagen think and hope for when working with artists? Can artists really improve community development and urbanity?

    Join the Living Copenhagen artist collective to share experiences, visions, griefs, laughs, critiques and new thoughts on socially engaged art in Copenhagen and Beyond.

    The program for the mini-conference is based on sharing experiences and ideas between all participating, so be prepared to see, talk, explain, discuss, learn and wonder.

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) and the MFA Computer Art Department host the MFA Computer Art 2012 Thesis Presentations. The event will be held over two days at the SVA Theatre and will include the work of graduating students.

The presentations showcase our graduates’ approaches to different themes and modes of creative self-expression in the digital arts. Over 45 thesis projects incorporate a variety of media, materials and cutting-edge technologies to address a range of topics, including the loss of innocence and the role of creativity in the process of becoming an adult by motion graphic artist, Yiu-Chen Yang, an exploration of kinetic video sculpture by digital fine artist, Jonathan Brainin, an installation where one experiences seeing sounds and hearing colors by digital fine artist, Hyun Gyu Kim, how conventional standards of happiness differ from person to person and the search for personal identity within an urban environment by 3D artist, Gyu Hyun Kim. The presenting artists also make use of different programming languages, digital fabrication methods, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, computer vision, and human-computer interaction—as well as traditional art production methods to realize their creations. Linear video works include single and multi-channel installations exploring both narrative and abstract expression through 3D animation, motion graphics, and stop motion animation. Department chair Bruce Wands comments that, “We place a strong emphasis on creativity and personal vision. This is essential in the development of an artist. As a multidisciplinary department, our students have a broad palette of courses and a state of the art facility within which any idea in the digital realm can be realized.”

The SVA Theatre is located at 333 W 23rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. The theater’s new design is the work of world-renowned designer Milton Glaser and features what may be the city’s largest kinetic sculpture atop the theater’s marquee. MFA Computer Art Department emphasizes creative experimentation and a multidisciplinary approach. Dedicated to producing digital artists of the highest caliber, the department guides each student in the development of a personal artistic style and a course of study that is individually tailored to meet his/her needs. The program also offers concentrations in animation, digital video/motion graphics, installation and digital fine art, interactive media, sound art, and performance.
